Data management II: Advanced data management using Stata

November 5, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

A 4-hour workshop taught by Ozan Jaquette, Ph.D.

Overview

Creating the analysis dataset for a research project can be more challenging than conducting the actual analysis. This is the second workshop in a two-part series that teaches the core skills of data management using Stata statistical software. These skills will help researchers save time while increasing data quality. Data Management II is targeted at those who know the basics of Stata, but do not have experience combining datasets and changing the organizational structure of data. The workshop will teach participants how to merge and append data, how to perform calculations across observations, and how to automate tasks using loops and user-defined programs. Prior to the workshop, students will be given access to the datasets and Stata “do-files” so they can run commands on their computer during the workshop.

Expected outcomes

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Create analysis datasets that merge data from multiple sources
  • Create longitudinal datasets that append data from multiple time periods
  • Create variables that require calculations across observations (e.g., create measure of student GPA from a dataset that has one observation for each course the student took)
  • Reshape the organizational structure data (e.g., convert a dataset that has one row per person and one column for each year to a dataset that has one row for each person-year)
  • Increase productivity by learning how to automate iterative tasks (e.g., reading in multiple years of data; running analyses on different subgroups) rather than writing separate commands for each task
  • Automate the creation of results tables suitable for publication (without manually entering results)

Pricing and Schedule

Time: Tuesday, November 10, 12PM to 4PM (EST)
Cost: $149
Location: Online

Time permitting, Dr. Jaquette will also answer questions about participants’ specific research projects. Participants can ask questions via chat, microphone, or telephone. In order to allow sufficient time for questions, the number of workshop participants is limited to 30.

Who should attend?

This workshop is intended for participants who have experience with basic data management skills, such as those taught in the Data Management 1 workshop. Students should feel comfortable working with Stata do-files and should have a basic familiarity with statistics. You do not have to take Data Management I prior to taking this workshop, but you should be familiar with Stata and be able to do things like use Stata “do-files” to run commands and create reproducible analysis datasets, create new variables, and use Stata functions to manipulate data.

If you are looking for an introductory data management workshop, check out Data Management I.

Agenda

  1. Merging datasets
  2. Appending datasets
  3. Performing calculations across observations
  4. Reshaping the organizational structure of data
  5. Global and local macro variables
  6. Using loops to automate tasks
  7. Creating user-defined programs to automate tasks

About the instructor

Ozan Jaquette is an assistant professor of higher education at the University of Arizona. His research investigates change over time in the enrollment management behavior of colleges and universities. He teaches courses in higher education finance and applied statistics with a focus on quantitative program evaluation. He has published a chapter on creating longitudinal analysis datasets and has served on technical review panels for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and for the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS).
